The Golden Fleece: And the Heroes Who Lived Before Achilles

Padraic Colum (author)

Written for young readers by a great Irish folklorist, this Newbery Award-winning anthology was acclaimed by Publishers Weekly as "still unequaled as an introduction to the classic myths." Padraic Colum recounts Jason and the Argonauts' quest for the golden fleece and related stories of Atalanta the huntress, the fearsome Minotaur, the minstrel Orpheus, and other immortal tales. Willy Pogány's enchanting drawings complement the text.

Poet, playwright, and a key figure in the Irish Literary Renaissance, Padraic Colum (1881-1972) was a prolific writer. Best known for his adaptations of Celtic tales, and particularly those for younger readers, he also addressed himself to a wider audience.
In addition to his work as an illustrator of classics, Hungarian-born artist Willy Pogány (1882-1955) served as an art director on several Hollywood films, including Fashions of 1934 and Dames. He was also an author and teacher whose instructive manuals include Dover's Drawing Lessons.
