Weleda was founded by Rudolf Steiner and Ita Wegman in 1921.

Responsible and ethical practises have been at the heart of Weleda ever since Rudolf Steiner articulated his vision for a company at the service of humanity and the world as a whole. Skin Food was Weleda's very first product, the ingredients of which were suggested by Steiner.

Weleda is recognized as a pioneer in susatinability and has won numerous awards and in 2018 received the first-ever Union for Ethical Biotrade (UEBT) Certification and label for treating people and biodeversity with respect.
