Rudolf Joseph Lorenz Steiner, 1861-1925) was born in the small village of Kraljevec, Austro-Hungarian Empire (now in Croatia), where he grew up. As a young man, he lived in Weimar and Berlin, where he became a well-published scientific, literary, and philosophical scholar, known especially for his work with Goethe's scientific writings. At the beginning of the twentieth century, he began to develop his early philosophical principles into an approach to systematic research into psychological and spiritual phenomena. Formally beginning his spiritual teaching career under the auspices of the Theosophical Society, Steiner came to use the term Anthroposophy (and spiritual science) for his philosophy, spiritual research, and findings. The influence of Steiner's multifaceted genius has led to innovative and holistic approaches in medicine, various therapies, philosophy, religious renewal, Waldorf education, education for special needs, threefold economics, biodynamic agriculture, Goethean science, architecture, and the arts of drama, speech, and eurythmy. In 1924, Rudolf Steiner founded the General Anthroposophical Society, which today has branches throughout the world. For this reason, he saw Freemasonry as the preeminent spiritual, non-sectarian, communitarian paradigm. He knew, too, that Freemasonry, though it appeared hollow, was perhaps the main repository of esoteric, ritual tradition and initiation remaining in the West. Most of the guiding spirits in the recent Western development had been Masons, including Goethe, Herder, Lessing, the founders of the United States, as well as Madame Blavatsky and the other great esotericists of the nineteenth century.

Although he never “became” a Mason, in 1904 the “Great Orient of the Scottish A & A Thirty-Three Degree Rite of the Order of the Ancient Freemasons of the Memphis-Misraim Rite” granted Rudolf Steiner—based on his self-evident, extraordinary initiatory status—a patent to direct his own “order” under the name “Mystica Aeterna.” He received his charter from Theodore Reuss of the Ordo Templum Orientalis or O.T.O. Nevertheless, Steiner was never a member of, nor did he have any involvement with, the O.T.O. Lazarus-John, the first to be initiated by Christ Himself, wrote his Gospel out of the deepest wellsprings of knowledge, implanting within it vital spiritual forces. As Steiner states in the final lecture of this volume, “This Gospel is not a textbook but a force that can work within our souls.” It is this force living in the words and rhythms of John’s Gospel that purifies the soul, transforming it—in the language of esoteric Christianity—into the Virgin Sophia, receptive to the Holy Spirit.

Along this path, we come to recognize that Christianity, far from being a codified system of beliefs, is a living power within the evolution of humanity, a power that is only at the beginning of its activity. What Steiner calls the Mystery of Golgotha—the death and resurrection of Christ—stands as the turning point of time, the event through which the Earth receives its meaning. The effects of this event, and the further activity of Christ as the Spirit of the Earth, will continue to evolve from year to year, century to century, until one day in the distant future, Christianity will fulfill its mission. I beg you to hold clearly in mind that it is the intention of these lectures to proceed in these two directions. It should not be simply a question of arguments about this Gospel, but rather that by means of the latter we shall penetrate into the deep mysteries of existence. In meditations on the Guardian of the Threshold and the explosive popularity of football, we are led to the conclusion that today human beings need to develop ‘spiritual feet’ to cross the boundary to higher worlds. The author’s final trip coincides with the recent natural catastrophe in Nepal, which prompts him to ask whether humanity can begin to take inner responsibility for the many such disasters – particularly earthquakes and volcanic eruptions – that take place around the world. At the same time, he was a member of the Anthroposophical Society and its Esoteric Section. In consequence, Beckh’s seminal study on Buddhism has an entirely unique quality. As a recognized authority on Buddhist texts, he knew that complete knowledge of such Mysteries was not to be found within the limitations of waking consciousness, sense perception and logic. Beckh was already aware that Gautama Buddha had indicated the stages of higher knowledge. Furthermore, his studies of Rudolf Steiner’s anthroposophical teachings revealed that such knowledge could be experienced directly, given disciplined meditation. Clairvoyant cognition included the conscious penetration of sleep consciousness, the dream state and an experience of pre-natal consciousness. Thus, based on comprehensive studies and personal experience, he resolved to present his own perceptions and vision to the public. In this sense the Great Religions create an absolute unity - not in what they say or teach, but in their contribution to each of us becoming ever more human. As Archiati says: 'The essence of a religion is in what it makes of a human being. And the actual unity of all religions is the creative product they have combined to make, namely the human being himself as the synthesis of all the religious paths which he has trodden in the course of his long evolution.'

Beginning with the Flood of Atlantis, Archiati places the religions in the context of human evolution, taking us through the development of Buddhism, Zarathustrianism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and onwards to the future of religion based on spiritual knowledge. This is not a theoretical study, however, but one based on spiritual reality. For example, Archiati considers how the founders of the various religions are working today. Are the Buddha, Krishna, Moses and Zarathustra doing and telling us the same things now as they were in the past, even though humanity has undergone considerable changes since?

PIETRO ARCHIATI was born in 1944 in Brescia, Italy. In Part I, ‘Raising the Foundation’, he studies the Judeo-Christian mysteries. After humanity’s ‘fall’ into materialism, these mysteries signal the development of human individuality. The impulse for self-hood continues with Christ, who brings a new path of divine love. But the mystery of Christ leads naturally to his shadow. But he didn’t know what to do with any of it. A few degrees in physics, math, French and English literature left him intellectually richer but clueless. A two-year stint teaching English to Buddhist monks in Thailand, though enormously satisfying, still fell short. Then he discovered the spiritual perceptions of esoteric Christianity and spiritual science given by Rudolf Steiner. This grounded him in esoteric literature and enabled him to complete a book on the Templar architecture of Chartres Cathedral (Hermetica Press, 2009). Then, several years later, the same stream flowed into the present volume. He continues his career as a writer and Waldorf teacher in Southern California. 9 November 2017; 306pp;
23.5 x 15.5 cm; paperback.

Michael S. There is now an abundant literature from Rosicrucian and esoteric traditions – from the deepest prayer and meditation – that addresses the exalted nature of John the Evangelist as expressed through his Gospel, Letters and the Book of Revelation. Yet it fell to Hermann Beckh to elucidate clearly how the individual known as ‘John’ became the source of such undying love and wisdom in Christ. According to Rudolf Steiner, John was the ailing Lazarus, called from death to a new life as ‘the disciple Jesus loved’.
